SURFACE GEOLOGIST

Surface Geologists might be alert and have a keen eye for details. They can see the big picture while staying on task. They are thinkers and 'do-ers'.


The Surface Geologists from both teams will cooperate and work together.



The Surface Geologist will:

  • Collect samples from all major outcrops and rock types (igneous and sedimentary), and use the data to create a geological map of the Mars' surface

  • Test permafrost for the presence of 'dry ice'


The Surface Geologist's equipment includes:

  • Geologist's hammer

  • Sample collection kit

  • Rock identification data base


The Surface Geologist will be in direct contact with EECSO (Electrical, Environmental & Crew Systems Officer) in Mission Control.



The EECSO will:

  • Monitor the life support system of the astronauts, including suit temperatures and oxygen levels.

  • Assist the Surface Geologist to identify rock samples, and record data collected by the Surface Geologist
